Secure a Linux VPS: access, exposed services and recovery checklist

Prepare SSH access, maintenance, firewall checks and recoverable backups for a Linux VPS. Test changes before exposing your application.

Confirm access and recovery before making changes

Use the credentials and management information actually supplied with the service. Identify the operating system, available administration rights and recovery channel before changing its access configuration. Keep the original working session open while checking a second connection.

Prefer protected SSH keys and appropriate separate administration accounts where supported. Test the new access path before removing an existing one. Changes to SSH configuration should be validated against the installed version before applying them.

Map the services exposed to the internet

List required public endpoints and distinguish them from private application components. A database, cache or administration panel may not need unrestricted public access. Keep an inventory of listening services and published container ports.

Check firewall behaviour from outside the server after changes. Container networking can interact with host firewall rules; Docker-published ports need their own review. A rule appearing in a host firewall interface is not enough to establish that a container endpoint is unreachable.

Plan maintenance for every software layer

Maintain the Linux distribution, runtimes and application components. Track which changes require a restart, a database migration or compatibility testing. Make a recovery copy before substantial changes and use a test environment when the application requires it.

A selected panel or initial deployment profile does not assign an ongoing administrator. Decide who monitors update notices, disk use, application errors and access events. Keep maintenance tasks in a schedule appropriate to the project.

Protect configuration and recovery copies

Give application processes only the access they need. Keep secrets out of public repositories, published container images and support messages. Limit access to backup copies as well as to the live environment.

Back up the data and configuration needed to reconstruct the application, then test recovery separately. A copy of files alone may omit a database or an external dependency. Record the restoration sequence and who can carry it out.

Test the recovery of files, databases and configuration

Check the result after deployment

Run these checks after initial setup and repeat them after meaningful network or access changes. They are an administration checklist, not a claim that a newly ordered service has already passed them.

  • Test SSH and the recovery channel.
  • Check public ports and private components from outside.
  • Confirm application HTTPS and expected redirects.
  • Review log and backup access.
  • Test restoration and record the recovery steps.
  • Track the service deadline and maintenance owner.
